09/15/12  Olympus OM-D with the mZD 14-150Again taken at 150 and f8. I must admit I almost always set this lens to f8. Seeems to be the best aperture for the lens. These birds are really fun to watch. They're always up to something and this one was in the process of demolishing a piece of wood.
Focused on the eye and as you can see, the eye is sharp. 1074

09/14/12  Olympus OM-D with the mZD 14-150So, many people are asking what all the fuss is about the new Olympus OM-D. Having used it now on a few outings it does feel like a nice camera. One thing I have particuarly noticed is that post processing workflow has had to change. The files don't seem all that sharp coming out of the camera and some heavier PP is in order. Dynamic range is better than the old models and I was dying to ry out my favourite mZD 14-150 on it. I like this lens on my older Olympus cameras and it's the one lens that always goes with me on vacation (if I'm taking the Olympus cameras that is).
Hre's one taken at 150, where people complain about image quality from this lens. Sorry, I can't really fault it at this focal length, or at any other come to think of it. The next few posts in the coming days are about the images using this combination. Following those I'll post some images from the OMD sporting the Olympus mZD 75-300 lens. I was quite surprised by this lens as it performs much better on the OM-D than on the older models. 1035

09/04/12  Panasonic GF1 with the 20 f1.7Having spoken earlier about a pro body from Panasonic got me thinking about my images with the GF1 and the G1. Both produce very good images and just because they now seem to be old hat doesn't mean that they should be discarded for new bodies. The image above was taken out of plane window on my way down to Spain in March of 2010. Quality can hold up against the newer bodies as it was taken at ISO 100. Where most newer bodies are better is at higher ISO, but if you have noticed I rarely use ISO above 800. So this for me has no value. These older bodies should do me fine and I shouldn't be considering upgrading my bodies. But, being me, and being a bit of a gear nut I just can't help myself and I will be purchasing new equipment at some time.
the reason for this post is the fact that Panasonic have now brought out the 12-35 f2.8 lens (24-70 f2.8 35mm equivelent). The 35-100 f2.8 (70-200 f2.8 35mm equivelent) has also been announced but not yet on the market. This for me is the beginning of the pro lenses for the m4/3 format. I don't think that Panasonic would be bringing these out without a pro body on the drawing board. That is what I have been waiting for.
The 12-35 seems to be a lovely lens and reviews have shown that it is highly regarded. I'm sure that the 35-100 will be of the same quality and if I'm honest with myself, those two lenses and a fast prime should cover my shooting needs quite well. I just hope Panasonic aren't sitting on the fence or twiddling their thumbs about this, I'm sure I'm not the only one eagerly awaiting a new high end body from Panasonic. 1929

Well, very well indeed. I took the 45 f1.8 out to the Zoo with me, just to get the feel of how it performs. It also gave me the chance to do some low light shooting to see how the focusing behaves.
As you can see from this image, the 45 f1.8 is a very sharp lens and the OM-D focusing is spot on.

E-M5 Focal Length: 45 mm Aperture: f/5.6 Exposure Time: 1/125 sec ISO: 640 08/22/12  Olympus OM-D EM5 with the mZD 12-50 kit lensHaving taken a second look at yesterdays post, I realised that no matter how long you looked at the image, you would never really see how big those clouds were without having something in the image that gave you the correct size perspective. So, todays post will give you that. This is an aircraft just coming to land at Frankfurt Airport. That plane isn't really small but look at the clouds behind it. That gives you an idea of how massive these cloud formations really get.
The lens is ok too. Good focal length for a day out, but I think my mZD 14-150 will be stuck on the front of this camera, just like it was stuck to my E-PL1. 1891
E-M5 Focal Length: 50 mm Aperture: f/6.3 Exposure Time: 1/160 sec ISO: 200 08/21/12  Olympus OM-D E-M5 with mZD 12-50 Kit Lens mountedI finally managed to get one of the hottest cameras on the market right now, the Olympus OM-D E-M5 with a kit lens. The only reason I purchased the lens as well was for protection against inclement weather. No point having a camera that's splash proof and not having a lens to go with it. It's actualy an OK lens, nothing really great about it but it does the job. One of the good things about it is the macro mode. Put it in macro mode by pressing the macro button on the side of the lens and slide the focusing ring forwards. The lens is then fixed at 43mm. Very good for close-up photography.
I wanted to see how this combination does for my favourite photography, photographing clouds. I had a good change one eavening when the light was almost gone but some huge clouds has gathered to the south east. They were being illuminated by the setting sun giving them a fascinating look. The shapes were great and the texture pretty nice. 1480

This image is from the new 12-50 lens that came with the camera. I thought it best to buy the kit lens because the OM-D is splash proof and I'd better get a matching lens to go with it.
This image is actually the fourth image I had taken with the camera, file number 10004. I normally shoot raw only but I had left the camera on jpg accidentally. Very impressive I must say. Not much post processing gone into it, just downsizing and a little sharpening.
More on this camera and lens in the coming weeks. This is just a taste of what's to come. 1098
E-M5 Focal Length: 50 mm Aperture: f/6.3 Exposure Time: 1/1000 sec ISO: 200 05/24/12  Square FormatThe more images I take in the square format, the more I like it. Apparently, this is the most difficult format to use and come out with some great images. I'm finding that I see a lot more in this format. Of course it won't improve your photography but this format suits me fine. I really like it. I'm not saying that these are great images but it's something I find easier to use than the usual 3:2 format which I don't really like. Much prefer the 4:3 or 1:1 format. 1313
E-P3 Focal Length: 42 mm Aperture: f/8.0 Exposure Time: 1/320 sec ISO: 200 04/29/12  Sony Nex CamerasNex-7 and the 18-55 kit lens again. This was one of the best sunsets seen on the whole trip. This is also the last image from this series from Norway. I hope that you've found them to your liking and of course, any feedback would be welcome. 1724
NEX-7 Focal Length: 45 mm Aperture: f/8.0 Exposure Time: 1/640 sec ISO: 800 04/28/12  Sony Nex CamerasThis is another one of these scenes that take your breath away. Taken with the Nex-7 and 18-55 kit lens. The Norwegian coast is simply stunning, and I can only recommend it to all. Perhaps not in winter but you do have more room as it's too cold for a lot of people. If you are planning a trip with the Hurtigruten Line then March, April or May would be the best months. In summer the ships are simply too full. 1863
