Olympus OM-D E-M1 - Olympus M. 75-300 f4.8-6.7

This is the first time I've used this lens for some time because of the type of photography I've been doing lately. Normally I'm a long lens shooter but my projects of late have kept me in the short to middle focal lengths.

I also have the Panasonic 100-300 lens and to be honest there isn't a lot between them. My 75-300 is the original version but Olympus have brought out a second version of the lens and that might be a little better optically but I haven't been able to test the lenses side-by-side. My preference is for using the Olympus because I just like the feel of it and it's a little shorter than the Panasonic.

I'm not going to be posting a lot of images from this combination and decided to post the monochrome images converted in Photoshop using a Gradient Map. For those who haven't tested this method before I can only recommend it. You can get some nice results.

Haven't had a chance to use this lens lately, actually, I haven't used it much at all due to the sort of photography I've been doing. This is the first version of the lens and I still find it produces some amazing images. Just have to careful that you keep your shutter speed up at 300mm.

Even at 75mm (150mm in 35mm terms) you can still see the compression in the lanscape that is not visible at shorter focal lengths. These mountain ranges are miles apart in reality, but appear to be just behind each other in this image. I don't get a chance to photograph something like this too often, so when I do get the chance I take as many different photographs as I can at every folcal length at my disposal. With the 75-300 lens attached I worked the scene but the best image came out at the 75mm setting. There was just enough of the mountain ranges visible to show the compression.

What an excellent lens this is. Much prefer it over the Panasonic 100-300. This was taken at 75 at f8. I'll be posting some shots taken at 300mm soon so watch out for those. Yes, it's dearer than the Panasonic but well worth it in my opinion.

My personal opinion about keeping animals in zoos and the like? Well, there's only one reason for it and that is to keep the species alive. The era of the normal zoo where people go to see animals kept in smal cages with no room to move, is coming to an end. And I'm glad of it. Slightly OT I know but since this is my photoblog I'm entiltled to it I suppose.

This is the last of the mZD 75-300 images for now but if I get any requests for more I can still post some. I've now accumulated quite a few from a couple of outings with it. This is definately a lens to take with me on my holidays together with the E-M5. I can strongly recommend it.

This park was pretty amazing. They had really everything for the family outing from huge playgrounds to bird avaiaries, and these Asian small-clawed otters. There was a pair of them making one hell of a racket. This was the female and pretty restless it was too. Would hardly stay in one place for more than a couple of seconds.
